What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is the ancient “science of life,” from India. It is believed to be 2000-5000 years old. Ayurveda has been practiced in India on-going since ancient times. By taking into consideration the five elements: earth, water, fire, air, ether, and the environment and their qualities: satvic, rajas, and tamas, one’s health is influenced. These elements and qualities can either bring one into or out of harmony based on the natural balance of elements found in one’s unique constitution. By understanding your natural ratio of the elements (although we have all of them) one can manipulate their environment through nutritional intake, lifestyle choices, etc. in order to support their balance of elements more fully and understand the causes of imbalances. One has a unique constitution of the ratio of elements and life circumstances push and pull you in different ways. If you learn where your center of balance is, you can bring yourself back into balance naturally.
What Can Ayurveda Do For You?
Ayurveda strives to re-connect us to our true nature of who we are at the most basic and balanced levels of body, mind and spirit. All life is connected by precise cause and effect relationships and Ayurveda treats the individual in this context, not in isolation. As a medical science, Ayurveda works on all of these levels to heal symptoms and diseases at their root and maintain a state of health and wellbeing. Ayurveda teaches how disease develops through an imbalance in the many forces constantly at play both internally—thoughts, feelings, emotions and externally—the changing environment, diet, weather, seasons, and stresses. The individual’s unique constitutional balance is based on these internal and external influences. Therefore, illness is seen as any disturbance in the individual’s constitutional balance.

The Three Doshas
As unique individuals, our nature is created by the balance of the three energies called doshas (vata, pitta, kapha). The doshas are combinations of the five elements: vata (ether & air), pitta (fire & water), and kapha (earth & water). Most people will have one dosha predominant, while a few will have two doshas approximately equal and only a small percentage of people will have all three doshas in equal proportion. Therefore, no two Ayurveda Wellness programs are identical because each person’s path towards balance is unique.
VATA (air & ether)
slender body, very active, creative mind, spirited, volatile emotions
imbalances: anxiety, insomnia, constipation, pain, dry & cracking joints & fear
PITTA (fire & water)
medium toned body, moderately active, sharp & analytical mind, passionate and strong willed,
imbalances: anger, jealousy, addiction, inflammation, skin, heart, liver problems, & ulcers
KAPHA (earth & water)
muscular, sturdy body, little activity, excellent memory, level and compassionate mind
imbalances: depression, excessive weight, rigidity, apathy, tumors, greed, asthma, diabetes
